Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Is NOT the Answer

As critical educators, we're well aware of how racism shows up in schools and how it permeates every space, from classrooms to staff meetings.

Even well-intentioned diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts fail to address the roots of racism. For leadership who want to check off a box, DEI may be a good fit because they maintain the status quo, but is insufficient for those wanting authentic transformation. We know how exhausting it is to see that the same power structures and underlying issues of systemic racism remain intact.

Racism Is Exhausting

Schools continue to replicate oppressive structures through top-down power dynamics and toxic labor patterns, which is why we continue to have unhealthy learning spaces: hate incidents, BIPOC teacher burnout, pushout of students of Color, criminalization of Black and Brown youth.

Critical Women, Queer, and educators of Color are often left to hold inequitable labor with little to no decision making power at their organization. These conditions are not sustainable and, in fact, uphold systems of oppression.

Pushout is Real

It's natural to feel frustrated and demoralized by the slow pace of change. As critical educators of Color ourselves, we've faced structural racism and witnessed firsthand the harm it causes in our learning communities.

Every day that passes, the status quo jeopardizes the future and well-being of our children.
